Southbrook’s harmonious relationship to the land is passionately expressed in every part of its operation, and is most obvious in its LEED-Gold hospitality pavilion designed to celebrate the vineyard that surrounds it. What may be less visible to the eye, but is most intrinsically at the heart of Southbrook’s philosophy is the organic- and biodynamic-certified vineyard and winery. Southbrook produces age-worthy wines, most notably Cabernet blends and Chardonnay – great wines with a sense of place.
Date set for “Taste the Place”
June 2, 2010 - Southbrook Vineyards has set the date for an exciting new opportunity that we are calling “Taste the Place.” On June 26 and 27, guests will walk through Southbrook’s organic and biodynamic vineyard, tasting unique wines among the vines where they actually grew. Four limited-availability Whimsy! wines will be featured. Guests will also be able to book ahead to pick up a box lunch that they can enjoy al fresco in the vineyard. To receive an invitation (and the special pre-release pricing on the new Whimsies), make sure that you are on Southbrook’s mailing list by contacting imintheloop@southbrook.com.
British critics wowed by Ontario Chardonnay
May 17, 2010 - “The British wine press invaded Canada House today. They came in droves to taste and assess Ontario's top Chardonnays,” writes wine expert Tony Aspler in a story he filed from London, England. The event was spearheaded by Southbrook’s Bill Redelmeier to put Ontario’s “Seriously Cool” Chardonnays firmly on the world stage. The event was an unqualified success. Read more at Tony’s website and at coolchardonnay.ca.
Three new organic and biodynamic wines released on Earth Day®
April 22, 2010 - In what is becoming an eagerly anticipated tradition, Southbrook Vineyards will again honour Earth Day® with the release of new biodynamic and organic wines – and this year, we have three! What is red, white and pink AND green all over? Well, it’s Southbrook’s 2008 Triomphe Cabernet Sauvignon, 2009 “Fresh” White and 2009 Cabernet Rosé, all certified by Pro-Cert Organics and Demeter. In addition to being launched at the winery, twenty-five restaurants across the province will also simultaneously release these wines on Earth Day®. Click here for more details and the list of restaurants.
For GTA earth- and wine-lovers, a great chance to taste all three is at BioVino, the Eco-Friendly Wine Tasting at the Green Living Show, April 23 – 25, 2010, at the Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario. www.greenlivingonline.com
Southbrook leads UK invasion
March 10, 2010 - “Canadian wine producers are getting very bold...” starts UK uber-wine writer Jancis Robinson’s Tasting Notes & Wine Reviews released today on her website. She continues, “...planning a major tasting of what they reckon are the best Ontario Chardonnays at Canada House in London the day before the start of this year’s London wine trade fair at Excel.” Read the full posting here.
This showcase of Ontario Chardonnays in London is the brain-child of Southbrook owner Bill Redelmeier. For Toronto-area wine lovers, a “dress rehearsal” for the UK tasting is happening on March 24, 2010 hosted by the Ontario Wine Society. Tickets are $39 for members, $49 for non-members. More details here.
Triomphes Triumph
February 16, 2010 - Southbrook announces two new releases – 2006 Triomphe Cabernet Merlot and 2007 Triomphe Chardonnay – are now available at the winery.
This Cabernet Merlot is Southbrook’s first from its new Niagara-on-the-Lake vineyard. “Dry, quite well structured, medium body, spicy, plummy, baked cherry flavours with a lingering somewhat cedary finish,” says Michael Vaughan. “A fine Ontario Chardonnay,” says Tony Aspler, who gave it five stars and selected it his Wine of the Week. You can also read Gord Stimmell’s comments in The Toronto Star.
Both wines are available at the winery and at Vintages.
Yes, it’s gorgeous, it’s glamorous, it’s green, and it’s making a statement. But what we have undertaken in the heart of Niagara wine country is so much more than building a new winery – we are building our dream.
Our roots are in agriculture. From a base in Richmond Hill, we have travelled a path from cattle, to a farm market, to making VQA wines and fruit wines. Now we take another step in our evolution. We continue to invest in Ontario agriculture with two contiguous 75 acre parcels in Niagara-on-the-Lake which we are farming organically and biodynamically. With these purchases we can now make better choices for the vines, the wines and the environment.
Southbrook is a new winery – with history. We have great depth in the bottle, and an experienced and creative team dedicated to taking us places we’ve only dreamed of.
We really want to share all this with you. Please join us here in Niagara-on-the-Lake to experience our dream, on your journey to wine enthusiasm.
