Southbrook Vineyards toasts Earth Day® with the release of three new organic and biodynamic wines
Southbrook is Canada’s only certified organic and biodynamic vineyard and winery, so these three wines are the only wines available from a Canadian producer that meet the exacting standards of certification. The new wines are a red - 2008 Triomphe Cabernet Sauvignon; a white - 2009 “Fresh” White; and a pink - 2009 Cabernet Rosé.
Twenty-five restaurants across Ontario, from Ottawa, Toronto, western Ontario and Niagara, will celebrate with a simultaneous launch of these wines on April 22nd – Earth Day®. Chefs and sommeliers in these restaurants will feature one or more of these wines on their wine lists, to honour Earth Day®, a commitment to the environment, and excellence in vine growing and wine making.
Southbrook released Canada’s first biodynamic wine last year on Earth Day®. Chef Jamie Kennedy, in the culinary forefront supporting sustainable agriculture, said of that release, “The delicious purity of the wine speaks volumes.”
A Little Bit About Biodynamics
Southbrook’s vineyard was certified organic by Pro-Cert Organics in the fall of 2008 and then became the first winery in Canada to be certified biodynamic by Demeter Canada. These wines are the third, fourth and fifth wines to be released from its estate-grown grapes since certification, which marked a milestone for Marilyn and Bill Redelmeier, owners of the winery. “Biodynamic farming has been practiced for years by many outstanding wine producers in Europe and we are proud to help make inroads in the Canadian wine community,” says Marilyn Redelmeier.
Biodynamic agricultural is a holistic farming approach that promotes the ecological self-sufficiency and internal harmony of the vineyard while taking into account the cycles of nature and the energy forces affecting the farm. Animals are integral to the process, and Southbrook “employs” sheep to keep the cover crops under control between the vine rows and to naturally fertilize.
Ann Sperling, director of Winemaking and Viticulture at Southbrook explains: “These practices are about quality in the bottle—and quality of life,” she adds.
“We were drawn to biodynamics as a way to more fully express the vineyard’s character in our wines. Together, everyone at the winery underwent the certification process to authenticate our commitment to sustainable practices,” says Bill Redelmeier. “But you don’t need to know anything about biodynamics to know that these are simply delicious wines.”
